Welcome to Platte River Academy! We are a public school of choice in the Douglas County School District. You will see, as you read the many links and pages on this website, that this school was not started with a “business as usual” idea or model. Our school was started to rewrite the rulebook and to extend the boundaries of the “possible.” We have had a magnificent strategy and it has worked brilliantly for over 18 years. We are very committed to continuing the school’s success and progress.
PRA is a charter school that has earned many prestigious awards, including the John Irwin School of Excellence Award (every year since 2001) and the Governor’s Distinguished Improvement Award. These are some incredible honors and they showcase all of the care, love, and hard work that has gone into this school.Click here for full article...

Beginning next week, our 3rd-8th grade students are scheduled to take state-mandated tests. The state requires that all public schools participate in state assessments as a common measure of accountability. Of course, PRA participates proudly because we know that our students will perform well on any assessment the state selects…thus the 15th John Irwin Award we just received.
The following state assessments will be administered:
Students will complete the assessments on devices in classrooms. The schedule has been designed in consideration of the developmental needs of the students, the number of devices available, and access to rooms at different times of day. Our goal was to embed these assessment sessions into the school day, minimizing the departure from typical schedules. Our 4th-8th grade students will complete two testing sessions each day (one in the morning and one in the afternoon), but our third graders will complete only one each day. The schedule was intentionally created around lunches, recesses, and Specials periods. Teachers will adjust assignments and homework during testing.
Teachers handed out calendars at conferences showing testing schedules, so hopefully, you are aware of the dates. For your reference, you may follow the link below to see when each grade will take their assigned tests: PRA State Assessment Schedule by Grade
For more information about state testing, please visit the “State Mandated Testing” page.
Also, please take the time to re-read the letter regarding our perspective on state assessments (teachers also shared copies at conferences). If you have any questions about the schedule, assessments, or if you wish to excuse your child from these assessments, please reach out to Mrs. Bonner (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Mr. Munier (email@example.com).

I am proud to announce that the Colorado Department of Education has awarded Platte River Academy the John Irwin School of Excellence Award for 2016. The award was not given to any school in 2015 because CDE lacked the assessment data primarily due to changes in the testing format throughout the state.
The John Irwin School of Excellence award is given to schools that demonstrate excellent academic achievement. Our school “exceeded” expectations on the academic achievement indicator which is the school performance framework that is used by the state to evaluate schools. There are 1,825 schools in the state. Only one hundred and sixty-eight (168) received this prestigious honor (i.e. 9%).
In Douglas County, 13 schools qualified for the award. Four were charter schools (Challenge to Excellence, Parker Core Knowledge, the STEM School and PRA), six elementary schools and three high schools.
THANK YOU PARENTS FOR YOUR SUPPORT THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, ESPECIALLY AS WE GO THROUGH THE ASSESSMENT/TESTING CYCLE ADMINSTERED BY THE STATE. We have noted often, how important the assessments are to our strategic efforts to provide a first-class education. This special award is a very nice by-product of having all our children included in the assessment cycle.
Please join me in thanking all our staff for a job VERY WELL DONE!!!
Girls soccer begins Monday, March 27th . Practices will continue Monday through Thursday, 3:20pm to 4:45pm, until games begin. The Art Room is in need of paper towel and toilet paper rolls for a 2nd grade project. And Mr. Willsea still needs empty wrapping paper tubes! Thank you so much for sending your recycling our way!
