Welcome to Platte River Academy! We are a public school of choice in the Douglas County School District. You will see, as you read the many links and pages on this website, that this school was not started with a “business as usual” idea or model. Our school was started to rewrite the rulebook and to extend the boundaries of the “possible.” We have had a magnificent strategy and it has worked brilliantly for over 18 years. We are very committed to continuing the school’s success and progress.
PRA is a charter school that has earned many prestigious awards, including the John Irwin School of Excellence Award (every year since 2001) and the Governor’s Distinguished Improvement Award. Parents please note: if you call in an absence for your student but don’t identify the reason for the absence, it will be considered unexcused. Kindly leave a detailed message so we can appropriately record your student’s absence. Reporting your child’s absence as soon as you are aware of it will enable the clinic aide to avoid calling YOU.
First practice is Tuesday, February 7th from 3:30pm to 5pm. No experience necessary. We will teach you everything you need to know. Open to 6th through 8th graders. Make sure you have an updated physical and athletic packet (next to Mr Pascua’s office) completed before the first practice. A preseason practice schedule has been posted on the Boys Volleyball website. It can also be found on the sports board to the right of the main office. See Mr. Pascua for more information.

The 4th/5th Grade Girl Scout Troop is working to earning their Bronze Award by helping families with ALS through a yoga fundraiser! Please come to our Community Yoga Event that has been planned and executed by some very excited and hardworking 4th and 5th grade girls! There is no set fee for the event – just donations at the door. All donations will be used by the troop to purchase ingredients and make freezer meals for local ALS families. It’s time to get ready for the Happy Camper Book Fair! The Book Fair is the primary source of funding for new books for the PRA library, so we appreciate all the community support we can get. Help is needed with decorating, working the fair, and setting up/taking down. We will decorate the week of February 21, set up March 4, run the fair from March 6-9, and take down March 10. Every February, all PRA families have the opportunity to voice their opinion about the current school year by taking the annual Operations and Academic Surveys offered by the School Accountability Committee (SAC). This year’s surveys will be available for you to take online from February 3-21. Your input is very important to us, and the more people who participate, the more useful the data collected will be.
Every family will receive a link to the Operations Survey to be taken first, and then from there, you’ll be directed to academic surveys for each of your children. Last year, 86% of families completed the Operations Survey (a record!), while 74% of our families completed academic surveys. We recognize that everyone is busy, and taking the time to complete surveys may be tough to squeeze into daily life. For your convenience, we are making the survey available on our new PRA app!
Additionally, as our way of encouraging families to take the surveys, we are offering 6th – 8th grades an extra dress of choice day in March if at least 80% of their families complete the surveys. If 80% or more Kindergarten through 5th grade families participate in the surveys, those grades will get to have an ice cream party for their classrooms. A very special “Choice of Shoe and Sock Day” will be awarded if 90% of the entire school turn in their surveys. Please help your kids get these fun days by letting us know your level of satisfaction with various aspects of PRA via these surveys. Both of the surveys are completely anonymous and no one will know exactly who is submitting the answers. We will share the results with you in a March newsletter article.
Please watch for an email next Thursday, February 2nd, with the link to the Operations Survey. The link will also be available on our homepage throughout the survey window (Feb. 3- 21). Thank you for letting your voice be heard!!
2nd Quarter/1st Semester 2016-2017
Dear PRA Parents,
The 2nd quarter and 1st semester have come to a close and the teachers have prepared the student’s report cards for your review. You will need to login to Schoology and check your children’s report card grades by following these steps:
1. Select your child from the pull down menu at the top-right of the screen
2. Click on the Grades link in the left navigation
3. Click on the Report Card button
4. Select All courses
5. Select the 2nd Quarter and 1st Semester grading periods
6. Click Submit to view the student’s report card.
Behavior based information is currently being covered in the comments area for the Homeroom section when necessary. Kindergarten through 5th grade teachers are now using a Behavior Rubric to best communicate this information. You will need to open the Homeroom section for 2nd quarter to review the specific details for each child.
Please don’t be alarmed when you see a grade for Homeroom now. Attendance information for the quarter is also listed in the Homeroom comments section. We are working on ways to make this meaningful and efficient and welcome your feedback regarding this change.

The 2nd semester has begun and we’re looking forward to sharing some of our new communication plans with the PRA community. Thank you to everyone that participated in the Fall Focus Groups! We learned valuable insights from the 14 different sessions and multiple one on one conversations. The team has begun working with a graphic artist to update the logo and branding elements that will be presented in a survey at the end of February. Once we have these finalized the updated newsletter and website will be developed. Our focus for 3rd quarter will be Facebook, Twitter and the PRA App. Please like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and download our app.
