Welcome to Platte River Academy! We are a public school of choice in the Douglas County School District. You will see, as you read the many links and pages on this website, that this school was not started with a “business as usual” idea or model. Our school was started to rewrite the rulebook and to extend the boundaries of the “possible.” We have had a magnificent strategy and it has worked brilliantly for over 18 years. We are very committed to continuing the school’s success and progress.
PRA is a charter school that has earned many prestigious awards, including the John Irwin School of Excellence Award (every year since 2001) and the Governor’s Distinguished Improvement Award. These are some incredible honors and they showcase all of the care, love, and hard work that has gone into this school.Click here for full article...
Platte River Academy has received the John Irwin Award for the fourteenth consecutive year. Congratulations to our students for another fine academic performance as a school. Additionally, special thanks to our teachers and staff for providing the instruction and caring classroom that enables our students to learn and grow and to our parents for the support you give your children, their teachers, and PRA. The banner pictured above is prominently displayed in our lobby and will eventually be mounted on the gym wall with the many others.

Effective January 1st, the PREA and PTO will merge to have a single group, PTO. This transition was decided on by both groups elected bodies and we have been diligently working over the past few months to make the change for the betterment of the entire Platte River Community. The groups have decided to keep two members of each group on the officer board, however with the restructuring we will be voting on the other voting membership positions at the January meeting. These positions will be based on nominations received from anyone in the PRA community. Please join us for the January PTO meeting so that you can submit your vote. We will meet on January 13th at 6:30 p.m. in the PRA Library.
You may nominate a person for a PTO position by clicking here.
Looking for a fun activity for your children over the winter break? We have the answer for you! The 8th graders (along with PRA coaches, teachers, and parents) are providing a fun sports camp for students grades K-5 the second week of winter break. Monday will focus on Volleyball, Tuesday is Basketball, Thursday is Soccer, and Friday is (age appropriate) Dodgeball. The sports camp for students K-2 will be 8:30 – 11:00 each day and grades 3-5 will be from noon to 2:30. Please use the form in the newsletter (Quick Link above) to register for the camp. You can choose just 1 day or all 4 days. Each individual day is $30 or $100 if you sign up for all 4 days. All of the proceeds go to the 8th graders towards their Washington DC trip. Please note that there is no camp on January 1st. Registration forms are due to the PRA office by Wednesday December 18th. Hope to see you there!

The Platte River PTO will be having an additional meeting for the month of December on Tuesday, December 17th. Due to the upcoming changes that are occurring with the PTO, and the complexities of discontinuing our relationship with DCEF at the end of this year, we need to have an additional meeting. We will be meeting on Tuesday at 6pm in the library at PRA. Please join us if your schedule allows. Tammy Walsh, PTO President.

And maybe it’s not raindrops on roses, or whiskers on kittens, so why not find out exactly what would tickle your child’s teacher or a PRA staff member’s fancy. PRA staff members completed an online form in the beginning of the school year telling us their favorite things — junk food, restaurants, coffee/tea, shops, what they do in their free time, hobbies, and even their birthday. The Wish List is in the form of an electronic spreadsheet and it’s easy to sort by grade or by staff member name (the default sort order is by last name). With the holidays approaching we’ve posted the link to the “Quick Links” section on the home page. Look for it in one of the grey boxes or click here.
Girls Scouts are collecting new and gently used toys to donate to needy Colorado Children via The Santa Claus Shop. A collection box will be in the school lobby until December 11th. See flyer in the Dec 5th Newsletter (Quick Link above) for the most wished for toys.
The student council is once again collecting items for the Arapahoe House to fill stockings for the holidays for teenage girls and boys, in particular. K-3 classes will be collecting items for teen girls, and grades 4-8 items for teen boys. We will collect all items by Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 18th and our class representatives will need to help us fill the stockings on Thursday afternoon, Dec. 19th. See list below for items needed: trial sizes are great!
Deodorant, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, mouthwash, toothpaste, toothbrushes, Q tips, hand sanitizer, mittens or gloves, socks, candy – packages of individually wrapped pieces, chapstick, journal, pens – packages of 6 or 12
Please check the Lost and Found cabinet in the front foyer for any items your student may have left behind. All items remaining after December 19th will be donated to charity. Thank you.
The Platte River Academy choirs are pleased to invite you to our holiday choir concert on Tuesday Dec. 10 at 6:30 in the PRA gym. This concert will be a nice blend of pop songs and holiday songs. Come celebrate the season, and the diligent hard work of our choral students. We look forward to seeing you there.
