Safety and Security

Welcome to PRA!

Everyone shares the responsibility to report a concern about student behavior or a potentially dangerous situation occurring at Platte River Academy. We will address concerns as soon as we know about it. Any student or parent can make a report in any of the ways shown below; keep in mind that our staff has been trained in responding to reports, and they will escalate the matter if/as the situation warrants.  For example, a teacher may bring a report shared by a parent to administration due to its severity. Building leadership may engage law enforcement if the facts indicate criminal behavior or a significant threat.

Regardless of how any report is made, once they know about it, PRA’s administrators will investigate the situation and deliver consequences to students based on the facts.  Not only do they have a responsibility to keep PRA safe, but also to know and grow every learner. Every situation is different, and many events involving children require ongoing support and interventions, beyond the initial disciplinary consequences. By reporting concerns and working together, we can maintain a positive and safe culture at Platte River Academy.

Neighborhood Safety and Courtesy

Although Platte River Academy is a charter school, we are very much part of a surrounding neighborhood. Because of that, we ask our parents to treat the homes that surround us with the same courtesy and respect they would show their own neighbors.

Part of our long-range plans for the school include an expansion to create space for preschool and middle school. The key to moving forward with those expansion plans is our relationship with the neighborhood.  Parents, we need you to take an active role in maintaining a positive relationship with our neighbors.

Please adhere to the following safety measures in our neighborhood:

  • No parking in front of driveways or neighborhood mailboxes.
  • No parking between the end of the PRA driveway and the swing gates.
  • No parking within 15 feet of an intersection.
  • Only cross the street at curb cuts.
  • Be respectful of crossing guards. They are fellow parent volunteers trying to keep your kids safe.
  • Please do not mingle and linger talking to other parents in the middle of the street during pickup.
  • Please do not allow children to play in neighborhood front/side yards while they wait for pickup.

Our Commitment to You

At PRA, we are committed to creating a safe and secure environment for our students, staff members and parents.

In the summer and fall of 2020, the school underwent several security upgrades thanks to a generous grant from the Douglas County Board of Commissioners. These upgrades include:

  • A redesigned front desk area to maximize security.
  • Ballistics-rated security features on front entry glass, walls and doors.
  • A vestibule that makes it easier for parents to check in, sign children in and out for appointments and pick up and drop off lunches and other items for their kids.
  • Bollard planters in front of the school for added safety in front of the building.

Checking into the building

  • We screen every person who enters our building with the Raptor security system.
  • A driver's license is required EVERY time you enter the building, even if you are a regular volunteer/visitor.
  • When you arrive at PRA, you will enter into the front vestibule area.
  • There's a self-serve kiosk where you can check yourself in with your driver's license. You can print out your own badge and show it to the front desk personnel, who will buzz you into the second set of front doors.
  • Our front desk personnel can also check you in if the self-serve kiosk isn't working.
  • Leave lunches and other items for your children on the shelves in the vestibule. Please communicate with the front desk staff about what you are leaving for your child. We will notify your student of items waiting for them through a schoolwide chat within our email system.
  • We also keep our Lost and Found and Sunshine Fund dropoff (used uniform clothing) in the vestibule for your convenience.
