Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
-Kindergarten Prep-

  • What is the relationship of Platte River Academy to PRA KPrep?

PRA KPrep is a day school program under the existing Platte River Academy Charter School and who partners with Espree Early Child Learning Center.  PRA/Espree provides staff, financial support, and guidance for the PRA KPrep Program.

PRA KPrep is considered an important part of the PRA community.

  • What is the Vision of the PRA K Prep?

The Vision of PRA KPrep is to grow our students academically and socially and connect our littlest learners and their families to one another and to the PRA Family. Our hope is that they will attend Kindergarten with us. We realize that this may not always happen, so our goal is that the students will be prepared for any Kindergarten program.

The Platte River Academy Mission is:

To provide a content-rich, academically rigorous education with a well-defined, sequential curriculum in a safe, orderly, and caring environment.

In the KPrep Program, this means that staff and families will ensure that every learner grows through age-appropriate expectations and experiences.

  • What curriculum/program is utilized?

At PRA KPrep, the academic program follows the Core Knowledge Foundation’s content-based curriculum as outlined in the Scope and Sequence and book series by E.D. Hirsch, Jr., et al., What Your First Grader Needs to Know. PRA has high academic expectations and emphasizes an intentional integration of the skills needed to begin the mastery of basic skills, such as language arts and mathematics.

The Core Knowledge Preschool Sequence (CKPS) is an age-appropriate set of model guidelines describing the foundational competencies and specific knowledge that provide coherent foundations for later learning in Kindergarten and beyond. The CKPS gives attention to the physical, social, linguistic, and cognitive (intellectual) aspects of development.

Using the CKPS as a framework, KPrep teachers strive to integrate curriculum and instruction across disciplines and to begin to develop students’ problem-solving and critical thinking skills academically and socially. Much focus is given to the building blocks that will enable our students to make meaningful connections that enable a natural and stress-free transition into the Kindergarten curriculum.

The KPrep classrooms promote and develop great character in their students and teach children to treat others as they themselves would want to be treated. Specific character values which include integrity, respect, responsibility, and compassion are modeled and strongly encouraged, just as they are in the elementary and middle school grades.

In addition, supplemental programs will enhance the program in the areas of literacy, math, handwriting, social skills, foreign language, art, music, and technology.

  • Who are the teachers and staff and what are their qualifications?

Our KPrep staff members are highly qualified and exceed the requirements determined by the Colorado Office of Early Childhood. Our Directors both have Masters degrees in Education and our Lead Teachers hold Bachelors degrees in Education. Supporting Teachers are ECE Lead Teacher Qualified and have significant years of experience. Our nurturing, experienced staff equip our youngest students both academically and social-emotionally. Please see the Kindergarten Prep Staff page for more information.

We also greatly value the family/staff partnership and are intentional about cultivating a flourishing community. Research has found that children have better success in school and in life when their family members are directly involved in their education. It is amazing when students can see some of the most important people in their lives contributing to their learning and the PRA community.
